I first heard about a child named Xavier because of my job
with a child care council. A home daycare provider called me
to ask what she should do about a child in her care that had
bruises. Xavier and his brother told the provider
that the mother
’s boyfriend did it to
him. I told her to contact CPS. She did not and
the child stopped coming to daycare. A few days later, he
stopped living, beaten to death by his mother
’s
boyfriend. There was no public outcry just small
articles about his death. His death was not widely
publicized, in part because I believe the community was
ashamed because not a year earlier another young boy was
brutally tortured and murdered. His death sparked the public
outcry and shouts of "Never again". With Xavier it
happened again and we failed and we buried his story like they
buried him. In fact Xavier did not even get a headstone,
a funeral service or an obituary until a year later when one
woman heard his story and started a drive to raise the money.
It seems every night I hear another story of a child abused or
murdered. It occurs in the small communities and the big
cities all across this nation. I want to hear your
stories and I want to share Xavier’s
story. My goal is to raise awareness and if one child is
saved this would have been a success.
